Intensified environmental requirements, a higher density of traffic, the increase of pay load, an enormous competition pressure in transportation traffic as well as the constantly rising of the driver's strain let the commercial vehicle requirements constantly increase over the past decades. The increase of economy and a maximum active and passive vehicle safety are the emphasis of the commercial motor vehicle development. In particular for heavy commercial motor vehicles the effect of the improvement of passive safety is limited because of the high energy content of the vehicle. With the increasing demands on commercial vehicles in the last few decades the air-brake system has been continuously improved. In addition to this the performance, operating convenience and economic efficiency of the brake system was increased by the use of the Telligent(TM)-Brake System, which was primarily introduced by Mercedes-Benz onto the market. Compressed-air actuated wheel brakes are activated via electrical control signals and integrated pressure control circuits. Optimised ABS/ASR functions are integrated in the system. Due to the electronic control the stopping distance is shortened and economy by harmonisation of the brake lining wear and integration of the endurance brake system is increased. In addition auxiliary functions like the brake assistant, the stability control and the adaptive cruise control are integrated in a simple manner.
