A model switch has been set up in order to investigate the switching behavior of silver based contact materials under 42 V DC conditions. The electrical tests are performed under resistive and inductive load at make and break. Contact materials evaluated are fine silver, fine-grain silver, silver/tin oxide, silver/zinc oxide, silver/nickel having silver content between 88 and 99 weight percentage (wt.-%). In addition some basic test with silver/tungsten and siIver/graphite were performed. It is found that fine silver shows the best results with regards to arc extinguish capability under both resistive and inductive load. Additional components, Ni or metal oxides, lead to a reduction of the breaking capacity. This effect depends on the type and amount of additives and dopants and the type of load. With service life tests, fine silver again was superior to the other materials. Ag/ZnO materials showed disadvantages with regard to contact resistance and DC contact materials transfer properties. The contact resistance of Ag/Ni contact material depends on the nickel content. At all Ag/Ni showed advantages with breaking capacity. Results with Ag/SnO2 materials having low tin oxide content resulted in an overall satisfactory or even good performance. Ag/SnO2 based on doped tin oxide 2 wt.-% was notable for low contact resistance, excellent avoidance of pip/crater formation and good breaking capacity.
