The purpose of this paper is to address key challenges that lie ahead of the automotive industry when integrating centrally provided information in form of automated telematics services into the information stream that is to be perceived and processed by the driver. Historically, the exclusive means of transferring centrally provided information into the vehicle has been via radio broadcast. The principal output format supported by radio broadcast is audio besides some basic visual information. The audio output format did not significantly change with the introduction of additional audio sources such as cassette and/or CD. The impact on automotive HMI requirements was limited. The situation did change significantly, however, with the wider spread introduction of navigation systems in the past decade, when drivers were also challenged to perceive and make use of information that was provided in extensive visual and text format. However, navigation systems are still on-board units with a somewhat restricted set of input and output routines and formats. This current situation is going to change further with the introduction of advanced telematics systems that potentially turn the vehicle's end terminal into an information source of unlimited capacity. Advanced telematics systems differentiate themselves not only by the wealth of information they make available, but also by the fact that they also often utilise an additional information retrieval mode - bi-directional cell phone communication. In addition to broadcast information - where the vehicle end terminal 'filters' the information that is available 'in the air', allows the use of bi-directional cell phone communication the driver to request individual information via the vehicle end terminal from a central server. Individual requests that are sent from the vehicle's end terminal to a central server that not only allows access to the variety of information available on that specific server, but also on the servers that are networked with that particular server. Both information retrieval modes will co-exist in the future. Telematics services are able to relieve the driver in certain driving situations by providing exactly the information required at the time and location when needed and wanted regardless of the information retrieval method employed. The challenge, however, is to present the information in formats that does not exceed the driver's cognitive capacities.
