In order to check the latest post-shredding technologies available, at an industrial scale, and to quantify their impact on the shredded vehicles recovery, a shredding test based on 201 ELVs (end of life vehicles) has been conducted by the Galloo group during winter 2002. The first main innovation of this trial is the fact that all the ELVs shredded were complete without dismantling aside the depollutions requirements. The second main innovation comes from the use, at nominal efficiency, of the plastic sorting capacity of the Galloo-plastics processes, operational from 200 at 12.000 tons/year level, and rise at 18.000 t/year in 2003. PSA (Peugeot Citroen) and Renault performed a mass-balance of the 201 shredded vehicles based on the material composition of the ELVs selected for the trial. It was evaluate the shredder efficiency for ELVs metals mass-balance, and also for the ELVs plastic mass balance. The shredding recovery efficiency assessment is an experimental work, as such, it is subjected to discrepancies and uncertainties, particularly it involves many weighing operations, and each subjected to error measurements. The question of the total mass and the depollution weight of the ELVs sample is an source of error.
