The training program for novice drivers of Metro Bilbao (the company that operates the underground trains of Bilbao) has been divided into 3 main stages: a theoretical course, a practical basic driving and an advanced driving. The simulator was integrated in their usual training program with the aim of improving the training effectiveness. The training objectives are: - to keep up to date basic driving techniques; - to train the driver to react appropriately against 10 possible incidents at service. An incident is defined as a situation that affects the traffic for reasons not directly linked to the train; - to teach the driver to identify and solve or minimize the effects of more than 600 train failures. The simulator is described in the paper. The main components are: instructor stand, self-study stand, driver cabin, visual system. In the first quarter of 2001, the first Metro Bilbao training course for novice drivers using the simulator was given. The transfer degree of the knowledge achieved with the simulator to the real situations determined the simulator training effectiveness. The integration of the simulator in the conventional training program has reduced in a significant way the whole training period. This time reduction leads to a cost reduction of training and the drivers' training conditions have improved reducing the training sessions at night.
