Driving simulators have been around for a number of years now. A primary goal with the original VTI driving simulator was to create a tool suitable for vehicle handling studies with special emphasis on the lateral dynamics. After a short outline of the historic development this paper focuses on the future development of a new moving base with substantially improved performance data compared to the old one. The following validation examples are described: - throttle off manoeuvre; - steering wheel angle and lateral acceleration; - sweep steering input, steering wheel torque as a function of lateral acceleration. VTI driving simulators are actively used in areas such as: vehicle dynamics research, man machine interface testing, research on driver behaviour, research on disabled drivers, effects of alcohols and drugs, vehicle handling, road and tunnel design. It is possible to simulate accelerations in different directions by either accelerating the simulator linearly or by tilting the system using a component of the gravitational acceleration. The current trend is to implement also a longitudinal motion making the simulator movable on an X-Y-table in the plane. It is important to incorporate linear motion in the vehicle longitudinal direction to give the driver cues when braking or accelerating. This is very important when studying intelligent cruise controls or other electronic systems. VTI has opted for a compromise where the simulator can be turned 90 deg and run with the vehicle longitudinal axle either parallel or at right angel with the rails to save cost. At last the authors describe recent development in computer graphics and outline future development of control system and programming environment.
