The importance of soft magnetics for the 42-volt electrical systems for cars of the future is discussed. In an improved power-steering torque sensor, three soft magnetic composite (SMC) parts injection-moulded together replaced 410L stainless parts with a 50% overall reduction in cost. Cost reduction was possible due to reduced material cost, easier and shorter manufacturing process, and fewer components.
