The use of powder metallurgy (PM) techniques in the auto industry is discussed. PM mamufacturers want to extend their reach into the high-stress area of automotive gearboxes. High-performance gearing requires full density in the critical stress region to withstand high Hertzian stresses. Surface densification enables the production of a relatively porous core component with full density in the critical stress region of the gear.
