Experience with liquid cooled lead acid batteries was made on electric vehicles more than 12 years ago. Main aim was to achieve an efficient temperature equalising within the battery pack by use of so called water pillows or cooling plates between the single modules. forced by the positive field experience this cooling pack where incorporated to the monobloc by using double wall box. Since EXIDE Technologies has designed four modules from 33Ah up to 180Ah with Thermal Management System and introduced this products to all kinds of hybrid vehicles; from small city cars to medium and big size hybrid busses. In this application, the Thermal Management System is by far more than just a temperature equalising system. Using heaters and/or radiators the temperature can be controlled very accurate and the monobloc performance becomes independent from any ambient temperatures. This paper introduces the design of these batteries, informs about the technical data and performance of these products and discuss field experience in various hybrid vehicles.
