The main disadvantages of electric vehicles today are the high battery weight, the short range and the long time needed for battery recharging. The combination of a battery with a fuel cell system in a lightweight electric vehicle presented in this paper allows to extend the range of operation at a reduced weight of the battery. Electric vehicles are offen used in urban areas. This means a highly dynamic drive cycle with relatively low average power but high peak power during acceleration phases. The power unit proposed in this paper is based an a small 2 kW PEM fuel cell which is fed with pure hydrogen. The main features of the fuel cell system are minimum parasitic power consumption, low maintenance and very short startup time. The fuel cell constantly charges an auxiliary NiCd battery that allows for high dynamic response, high peak power and brake energy regeneration. The system has been integrated and testes in the TWIKE easy, a highly efficient lightweight electric vehicle.
