A new sensorless control strategy has been developed for a permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) used as Starter/alternator in an auxiliary power unit (APU). The rotor is firstly shifted to a known initial position by injecting dc currents through stator windings. Then the PMSM accelerates following a ramp speed signal within a short time. At the end of the ramp signal, closed loop torque control based an estimated rotor position is engaged to bring the APU to its operating speed. A new sensorless algorithm for position estimation using measured currents and reference voltages is introduced. An outer power loop sets the torque reference for the PMSM according to required power and the computed speed. Implementation of this sensorless method in Technologies M4's Starter/alternator is described. Simulation results are presented and discussed.
