To increase the performance of electric vehicles powered by a single battery, an additional energy storage with high peak power behaviour (booster) can be used for covering the short time peak demand during the acceleration and deceleration phase. A suitable booster storage is the double layer capacitor (DLC), which achieves a specific power in the range of 1000 W/kg and above. The best available battery systems may range one magnitude lower. Up to now there has been done only little research on the use of DLC in electric vehicles beyond the simulation stage or stationary laboratory set-up. In order to close this gap and to collect experiences in real traffic operation a suitability test under the lead of the Elektrotechnisches Institut/Universität Karlsruhe in cooperation with the Fachhochschule Offenburg as well as the local companies chemTEK, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg and Stadtwerke Karlsruhe has been performed. Thus an electrical vehicle of the type MB180E (van) was equipped with an additional storage, consisting of 105 DLC cells (Panasonic PowerCap 1500 F/2,3 V) and prepared to monitor parameters of the power flow during a mobile application. A high energy battery of the type ZOXY, a mechanically rechargeable zinc-air battery, produced by chemTEK, had been integrated as main power source. The coupling of these two storages was assembled with two IGBT half bridge modules. This circuit topology represents a combined buck-boost-converter depending on the direction of energy flow. The implemented control algorithm and a simple energy management are presented as well as measuring results.
