This article reveals the current status of ship manoeuvring. The term is used to distinguish it from automated steering systems that merely keep ships on pre-determined headings. Complicated manoeuvres can now be performed with automatic guidance systems. To get a ship from point A to point B the task may be split into two entities, one a geometric task to ensure that the ship follows a path or curve. The other is a dynamic task that specifies, speed, acceleration etc. In the latter case optimisation may be for greatest fuel economy or to meet time constraints. Some history of automatic steering precedes a discussion of the conventional waypoint tracking system. The new system is discussed in terms of the problems to be solved and some current control solutions such as the application of Serret-Frenet equations. Future challenges will arise from the need to carry out operations in extreme weather conditions.
