The design of roll dies and preforms is established through practice and relies heavily on designer experience and simple analytical tools. However, to move ahead, a new paradigm in designing dies and preforms is required. The new approach is based on a shift to scientific techniques such as finite element analysis (FEA) and quick-execution computer methods. A more scientific design methodology will also ensure longevity of the factory design practice and complement the expertise of specific personnel in the work force.
