Fighter aircraft are an effective and versatile weapon for force projection, able to attack both tactical and strategic assets. However, the ability of these systems to effectively engage the enemy is only as good as the targeting information they possess. Recent conflicts have demonstrated the necessity of robust, all-weather sensors. Traditional electro-optic sensors have limited stand-off capability and are unable to operate in poor weather conditions. Research is being conducted to determine the utility of SAR imagery, collected and used for targeting by a fast-jet strike aircraft. This paper addresses two main strands of work. The first concerns the quality of SAR imagery required for effective target acquisition. The second examines the diffculties of collecting this imagery from an agile fast-jet platform.
