The increase of diagnostic functionality in automotive electronic control units (ECU) along with strict legal requirements in the sector of emission related diagnostics imposes strong requirements on Hardware-in-the-Loop test systems. The monitoring strategy of OBD systems is such that the ECU has to detect a malfunction as specified in the regulations and store an error code in the fault code memory of the ECU. Depending on the type of fault detected the fault code leads to illumination of the malfunction illumination lamp and storage of a permanent fault code may be erased from memory. Hence, the following functionality has to be provided by the Hardware-in-the-Loop test system: (1) Real-time simulation of dynamical errors such as deteriorated catalysts, faulty flows through various systems, etc. (2) Real-time misfire simulation. (3) Simulation of shortcuts, broken wires and out-of range values. (4) Access to the ECU's fault code memory in order to check whether a simulated error was actually detected by the diagnostic algorithms. For the important case on 'On-Board-Diagnostics II' (OBDII) it is shown in the paper how the capability of such systems has to be tuned in order to enable powerful and efficient testing of diagnostic functions. It is shown in particular how the architecture of the ETAS tool chain, simulation models and test automation tools is tailored to achieve this goal.
