Presently, asphalt sheets are utilized as a sound insulator for floor panels. However, there is a rising demand for the development of a totally new sound insulator twofold: to meet weight reductions and to improve the manufacturing process. In order to meet these criteria, a new sprayable damping material exhibiting high damping performance over a wide temperature range has been developed. The developed damping material, called 'damping coat,' is composed of new high performance resins (half-compatible acrylic styrene/SBR system) whose SP, Tg, and tan delta values are controlled for damping performance and molecular structure compatibility. Verification experiments in actual vehicles confirm that damping coat contributes to weight reduction of approximately 30 % due to improved damping performance. This means weight reduction of approximately 1.5 kg per vehicle, based on 5 kg of asphalt used per vehicle. To find an effective application pattern for damping coat, the influence of slit application on damping performance was analyzed in panel resonance modes, revealing that damping coat in slit application can provide high damping performance. The developed damping coat has been used on the floor tunnel section of the Toyota Crown since 2000. Commercialization of damping coat is presently under consideration, to enable application to the entire floor panel of the Crown and other models. Our future task is to seek optimal application patterns for further weight reduction. utilizing the full potential of the liquid damping coat's application flexibility. And then, lt has possibility to reduce the energy usage of the paint plant. (it is easy to adapt the short time and low temperature baking condition.)
