From 1995 to 2015, the important automotive technology is and will be telematics, which is the combination of computers and communications. In automotive applications, this encompasses functions such as navigation, intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and Internet access, as well as future types of connectivity. Still, the fundamental concept of driving remains eyes on the road and hands on the wheel, which determines the types of technologies that are best suited for displays in automobiles. We are already seeing center console liquid-crystal-display (LCD) panels and audible prompt systems used in navigation applications. As this evolution of automotive instrumentation proceeds, many factors must be considered. A review of the specifications, developments, and measurement issues is presented.
