Today's tire pressure monitoring systems comprise valve stem mounted battery-powered wheel units for pressure measurement. In this contribution, a novel intelligent tire system is presented providing several functions including tire pressure monitoring by battery-less operation based on a transponder principle and the permanent transparent incorporation of the electronics (including antenna) into the tire. Moreover, tire identification capability is being also embedded in the system. The paper describes the basic system functionality and the key technical parameters in order to start an industry-wide discussion on standardisation. Passive technology allows for powering the electronics through the LF communication link eliminating the need for battery power and the receipt of data on demand. The algorithm software stored on the vehicle ECU (electronic control unit) can be programmed for various levels of tire information in the form of low pressure warnings at predetermined threshold settings as well as convenience notifications such as leak detection. The main improvements compared to actual monitoring systems are: Electronics is permanently attached to the tire; cost associated with wheel based LPWS (low pressure warning system) installing is eliminated; tire identification is available through RF inquiry; the vehicle transceiver can read and write data to the chip; no batteries to wear down or dispose are used. The data link between tire and vehicle will established future intelligent tires by expanding the type of data available for optimisation of vehicle performance and safety.
