Brake moan is mostly problematic with rear drive axle assemblies exhibiting as low frequency friction induced chassis vibration accompanied with uncomfortable noise level both inside and outside the vehicle compartment. In referencing to an on-going moan investigation, this paper presents an analytical modelling methodology in treating the moan mechanism. It is intended to be a tool for closing the loop from component design to the simulated system verification process, encompassing multi-body dynamics and finite element analysis, in order to understand the moan mechanism and potential solutions to eliminate it. Case studies are presented in utilising the proposed analytical tool with the focus on the interaction of subsystems, i.e. axle assembly and brake assembly, being coupled by the friction force, driving a mode coupling system response. Thus, design change based on dynamic characteristics at component level is not sufficient for moan prevention, but friction screening becomes evident as being most effective in preventing moan by identifying lining materials exhibiting just minor level changes of friction coefficients from the static to the dynamic phase.
