Smart surface technology is the secret behind the development of flat light sources that can be integrated into a broad range of applications. The plastic mouldings are produced in a single step to create an all-in-one operational module, requiring a minimum of assembly work. The heating/ventilation system control panel found in car interiors, for example, required a least five different components, creating a high degree of logistical input. But smart surface technology has changed all that. The production process has been reduced to a single step and, thanks to the three-dimensional mouldability of the film, the structural components can be adapted to any spatial restraints and design requirements. A printed Makrofol/Bayfol film is made from a PC/PC+PBT blends forms the smart outer skin of the plastic component. This film provides excellent transparency, flexibility and dimensional stability and allows the light produced in the multi-layer printed system beneath it to pass through. This system comprises an electrode, which is also transparent, such as a Baytron P electrode and a counter-electrode beneath. The two are separated by means of a non-conductor. If a voltage is applied to the electrodes, the system produces cold light with very even illumination. This phenomenon is known as electroluminescence (EL). The development is the result of close co-operation between Bayer and Lumitec, which has applied for a patent for a multi-layer EL system. In addition to control panels, there is also scope for using the development in other instruments in car interiors, as well as in door sills and other optically important components. Very practical applications could include an internal light in handbags, suitcases and deep freezers. The light never fails, even in wet-process rooms, because the plastic components are waterproof.
