The order for a twin cell rail car dumper is based on Metso Minerals (Australia) experience in developing highperformance unit train car dumper systems. The car dumper system includes a two-cell car dumper with an 8-drive, rack and pinion-style positioner. It has 4 wheel-lock units on the entry side and 6 wheelgripper units on the exit side. The system is designed to unload a rake of 240 iron ore wagons at 9450 t/h with an overall unloading time cycle of 80 s. The specification for the car dumper cells called for the ability to meet a design life of four million dump cycles and capable of continuous operation, 24 hours a day, 365 days per year with a minimum availability of 98 %. The fatigue design is based on 152 t gross wagons and the strength case based on 173 t gross wagons. Both in-line unit train-dumper cells are a full rotary type with a moving side beam support to allow drive through of the locomotive. Four gravity-operated independent hook-type clamps allow the wagons to be clamped. The dumper cage is supported on four pairs of rollers at each end and arranged to rotate about the wagon coupler centreline. The drive is located at one end of the cell. AC variable frequency motors are used to give the necessary speed control for a complete tip and return cycle of around 30 s. The drive units are located at the ingoing end of each dumper cell. The 200 kW AC drive motor is controlled by a VVVF AC drive allowing smooth controlled ramp acceleration and deceleration to reduce the effect of large torque changes. Using shaft position encoders and tachometers all controlled by a PLC, allows the dumper to be brought to rest, with the platform rails accurately aligned after each cycle. The positioner main frame is designed as a box section structure in order to withstand bending moments caused by train hauling forces. The box-type structure is also suited to the cartridge-type drive extensions, which are mounted in machined bores. The positioner runs on four support rollers mounted on rails running parallel to the main track with hauling forces being countered by four guide rollers running along a spine bar arrangement. The train holding devices consisted of wheel locks on the entry side and wheel grippers on the exit side. The wheel grippers grip on the empty wagons in a disc brake fashion, and the train holding devices isolate the car dumper from the forces generated in the rake of wagons, while the car dumper is rotating.
