America's automobile industry doesn't just manufacture the passenger cars and light trucks that millions depend on for work, shopping, vacation and other mobility needs. Automakers and their suppliers and dealers across the country drive the US economy, and that economic engine has more horsepower than many realize. America's automobile industry is one of the largest employers in the country. When jobs dependent an the industry are included, the auto industry is responsible for 6.6 million jobs nationwide, or about 5 % of private sector employment, according to the alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. Annual production capacity for cars and trucks exceeds 2.5 million vehicles with an investment in US plants and equipment of almost USD 25 billion. The automotive trimming and related products market has been growing steadily. In 2001, a total 5381 companies employing 68000 people and posting sales of nearly USD 9 billion supplied the auto industry with everything from bindings and visors to fabric printing services. The Motor Vehicle Fabric Accessories Seat Manufacturing segment has also steadily grown from 283 firms with 37235 employees to 302 companies with 43983 employees and sales of more than USD 10 billion. The good news for textile suppliers is automakers are paying closer attention than ever to the passenger compartment. Detroit has taken a magnifying glass to their interiors, paying more attention to details and creating a level of craftsmanship that hasn't been there before. The Bush administration made official its plan to require the biggest increases in light truck fuel economy in nearly two decades. Under the proposal, the light truck fuel economy standard would rise 0.3 mpg in the 2005 model year. It would go up another 0.6 mpg in both 2006 and 2007. One option to increase vehicle fuel economy is to reduce overall weight. This is possible by the application of fibre reinforced composites.
