This work investigates a racing car charging system with a permanent magnet alternator (PMA). Three different power interfaces between a PMA and car DC bus are considered: a tyristor bridge and a switchmode converter both with and without power factor correction. The operating principle behind each system is then described and the key waveforms given. Furthermore the electrical performance of the systems is compared, to find the most appropriate architecture für a Formula One racing car application. The study was conducted with experimental verification on laboratory prototypes.
