A few years back, the automotive world was banging on and on about the importance of telematics, but the hype seems to have cooled down. The report shows that people still expect the same from telematics as they did in 2001, and an overwhelming majority of respondents give high priority to safety and navigation-related telematics services. It is a fact that the telematics business is growing, but the focus has changed completely. While consumer-related services were top priority during the e-business hype - things like emergency call, breakdown call and traffic information - the market is moving more to asset-based services, such as remote diagnostics, theft protection, fleet management and wireless software updates. The main development in automotive telematics in the past year has been the breakthrough on open standards, using embedded Java technology and the TCP/IP (transmission control protocol/internet protocol) communication standard for bidirectional and secure data communication with vehicles.
