The book provides an overview on current advanced space propulsion concepts. The authors give a short historical review on the development of space propulsion systems. Propulsion fundamentals are outlined, trajectory and orbits are discussed and propulsion systems are classified according internal/external energy and internal/external propellants. Chapter 2 discusses chemical propulsion systems, outlining the following issues: - thermodynamic characterization, chemical propulsion overview, nozzle design, - atmospheric flight, - advanced propellants, - alternative designs and reusable launch vehicles. Launch assist technologies are mentioned. An overview of nuclear propulsion systems is given: fission propulsion, radioisotope nuclear rocket, fusion propulsion and antimatter propulsion. The following electric propulsion systems are discussed: electrothermal, - electrostatic, - electromagnetic, - induced spacecraft interactions. Chemical and electric micropropulsion is shortly reviewed. Propellantless propulsion systems as tethers, propellantless electric/nuclear propulsion, photon rocket, beamed energy earth-to-orbit propulsion, solar sails and magnetic sails are discussed. At last breakthrough propulsion is examined: - current fundamental limitations in propulsion, - quantum physics, relativity theory, electromagnetism and space propulsion, - experiments leading to possible breakthroughs.
