The introduction of depowered side bags, new side crash tests and new protection systems increases the sensing requirements. Under these conditions the required time to fire the side bag for an optimal occupant protection is very short. Therefore the goals of new side crash sensors are: fast and reliable firing decision and flexible design of the sensor architecture. Pressure sensors indirectly measure the deformation of the door. Due to door leakage the correlation between pressure increase and volume change can be described only in first approximation by the simple adiabatic curve equation. This paper presents the system enhancements offered by the sensing of the pressure inside the door cavity: - flexible sensor location, - reproducibility of crash signals, - crash signals are proportional to crash severity: better crash discrimination, - possible use of FEM. The development of the sensing element is presented and some of its advantages and properties are pointed out: - mechanical design of the pressure sensor, - sensor characteristics and signal processing, - interface, - failure diagnosis. The advantages are mainly a more robust firing decision, a simpler mounting and application process and a faster response time. An intelligent combination of pressure and acceleration sensors is necessary for optimal system performance.
