Since 1933, the German high technology was a source of inspiration for Soviet designers and constructors and a technical base for industrial development of the Soviet Union. From the very beginning, not only single pieces of German metal working machines were bought to be copied and reengineered. A new type of Soviet submarine was constructed from 1933 to 1935 in cooperation with a German company. The BMW engine 500 HP was licenced to the Soviet Union and used in 1934 for driving the T-28 tanks. The 70-ton plates for war ships were cast and forged in the middle thirties by a German company. A contract for delivery of German range-finders and periscopes was signed in 1936. Equipment valued at more than 5 million reichsmark was supplied from 1936 to 1938 according to this contract. A bank credit of 200 million reichsmark was allowed to the Soviet Union with an official German warranty. The credit used for buying investment goods in Germany was not paidoff until 1941. The economic cooperation was substantially intensified in 1939, after the secret German-Soviet agreement had been signed. In particular, high efficient metal working machines for the armaments industry (aviation, production of ammunition) were imported in big quantities. According to the available statistical data, 6430 high-performance German metal working machines worth of 85.4 million reichsmark were delivered from 1940 to 1941 to the Soviet Union. The contemporary commercial German-Russian relations have reached quite a high level and are concerned not only with an exchange of goods but also with an R&D cooperation and technology transfer.
