Bayer Corporation is currently offering a chemical technology that combines the lightweight properties of a honeycomb core with the high strength properties of a fiber reinforced polyurethane skin. The resultant combination yields a part that offers a very high stiffness to weight ratio and is ideal for applications ranging from automotive load floors to pick-up truck tonneau covers. At the present time Bayer AG is working with several manufacturers in Europe utilizing the Baypreg F technology. A number of automobile producers, including Audi, BMW, DCX, and Fiat, have Baypreg F honeycomb parts on current models. The Baypreg F technology offers manufectures a wide range of selectability in part physical properties through manipulation of the composite components. This paper will give examples of composites constructed with a range of core and facing materials. It will offer guidelines for material selection based upon desired part end use. A discussion of material processing and equipment requirements will also be given. The paper will culminate with an overview of potential applications in the automotive and non-automotive industries. This overview will be linked to a discussion of the market potential of the Baypreg F technology.0
