In order to further enhance steerability and to apply Honda's vehicle stability assist (VSA) to vehicles other than front-engine-front-drive (FF) vehicles, technology needs to be developed that can control slip at all 4 wheels. The goal of the research project presented in this paper was to enhance the performance of the VSA. The basic goal of this research is to achieve both enhanced stability (rear tire cornering force) and enhanced steerability (steering effectiveness). The following research issues were reached: 1. Develop items vehicle side slip angle and tire side slip angle estimation logic (beta estimation logic). 2. Develop logic for estimating the friction coefficient for the friction between the tire and the road surface (my estimation logic). 3. Develop optimal 4-wheel slip control logic (lambda control logic).
