Several kinds of driving assistance systems are being sold commercially in order to improve traffic safety and transport efficiency. In designing warning systems such as lane departure warning system (LDWS), the warning effectiveness and ease of recognition should be discussed simultaneously. The objective of the study presented in this paper was to analyze an LDWS warning method that can satisfy the following two conditions: 1. Warning should effectively reduce driver steering latency to avoid lane departure. 2. Drivers should easily recognize the meanings of the warnings. The VTI dynamic driving simulator was used. Two types of acoustic warnings and two types of haptic warnings were used: monaural beeps, stereo beeps, steering vibration and pulse-like steering torque. The driver behaviour was analysed in terms of steering reaction time, i.e. the steering latency to the warning outputs and maximum lateral deviation of the vehicle. The conclusions of the study can be stated as follows: When drivers were not aware of the meaning of warnings, steering vibration effectively reduced the reaction time. After having learned the meaning monaural or stereo beeps were effective in reducing the steering reaction time. In response to warnings transmitted by pulse-like steering torque, drivers turned the steering wheel in the opposite direction to compensate. The steering latency for correct steering exceeded that of the other three warning methods.
