Interfacing conventional safety components to electronic safety devices is not too complicated. Compared to the conventional safety chain it gives the additional benefit of enhanced diagnostic capability and possibly a higher safety level (in a 'chain' with serial wiring of safety switches one can achieve control category 3, with all switches wired directly to a safe input module category 4 is possible). If it comes to interfacing outputs, it is important to choose the right strategy for high safety functionality and low complexity. Today, distributing safe data by safe fieldbus systems and computing the safe data by a safe control unit (PLC or SIU) gains the highest benefits, when it combines a relatively high number of safe input devices to a low number of output units and wide diagnostic requirements. In the future, when safe drive controls and intelligent circuit breakers become available, this may become true for any number of safe sources and safe output devices.
