Today, applying bus technology in the automation of ships has become the present state of technology. The use of bus-systems minimises wiring while installation costs are reduced at the same time. Like in general industry automation, a common standard could not be established so far. This is the goal the SIG (Special Interest Group) Maritime of CiA e.V. (Can in Automation e.V.), a co-operation of well-known manufacturers of engines and automation systems as well as their suppliers, have set themselves. Here, the CAN-bus with CANopen protocol which has already found frequent use in many systems onboard ships serves as basis. This article describes the possibilities of teleservice when applying CAN-bus. For this, the relevant characteristics for the diagnosis of the CANopen protocol are explained at first. Pre-defined object indexes of the protocol help to read out and set hard- and software version, error messages, in- and output data as well as configuration parameters of different components. By means of a remote control for ship propulsion systems these objects are described in detail. Furthermore, the data transfer of ships is analysed by telecommunication. Based on this, a method is developed which allows to reduce the CAN-bus data to a simple modern connection. At last the MAREX GS (global service) system is introduced which realises the teleservice for automation systems based on CAN-bus. Besides the mere online diagnosis via telecommunication, MAREX GS will also provide the necessary logistic environment for a fast and extensive service desirable for automation systems on ships.
