Since July 2002 vessels are to be equipped with IMO proved AIS transponders. The IMO intends that AIS will improve the safety of navigation and ameliorate collision avoidance by providing the navigating officer on board with more and more reliable information. Presently collision avoidance (CA) information available on a ships bridge is mainly based on radar information. Different display modes and features are available on radar but also on ECDIS based systems. Beside necessary performance and technical standards, as well as test specifications, there are also operational procedures for the on board use of AIS information. At several sessions of IMO committees AIS was and is still a concern. One of the aspects mentioned deals with the practical use of the information available via AIS for collisions avoidance measures. The availability of the new technology allows for a wide range of new operational and technical improvements. Own investigations supported by the German Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing deal with the potential use of AIS based information for the ship based collision avoidance process. Starting with the existing rules and the defined standard AIS messages, several display facillties were designed with the specific aim of giving potential assistance to the responsible officer of the watch (OOW) for his situation assessment and decision making under conditions of good or restricted visibility. This paper pinpoints selected display features based on processed AIS data. The display functions designed are examples of potential integration of AIS information into existing navigation systems available on modern ship's bridge equipment. Existing IMO resolutions, guidelines and recommendations were taken into account. The intention of the development of the display options is to provide more detailed and clearer information on encounter situations with other AIS equipped vessels. Furthermore display options were created to assist the decision making for initiating an evasive manoeuvre. For this purpose on the basis of the moving and encounter parameters available via AIS, action limits will be calculated and visualised in a related navigation display. Potential benefits, as well as some unsolved problems and drawbacks, will be discussed with respect to the technical problems that have to be dealt with in relation to the existing International Rules for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREG).
