This paper investigates the possibility of increasing vehicle generator current at low speed, the approach being justified by the rather poor alternator performance at low speeds. The presented solutions have been verified on appropriately modified test alternators. They envisage both stator and rotor modifications consisting of a combined system of switched stator windings and a modified rotor structure. The modifications were applied to two production alternators and experimental results have demonstrated sizeable improvements in output current and specific power.
