This paper describes a down scaled model of a propulsion system for a high-speed railway train. The simulator consists of four line-side converters, four induction motors driven by two inverters, an eddy-current braking (ECB) system, two dynamic braking system, a flywheel and some auxiliary systems. A DC generator and four water sprinklers are used to simulate the train resistance and adhesion force. The control algorithm of traction and braking including anti-slip/slide and power factor control is developed using the simulator. The improved system characteristics of minimization of harmonics and realization of sensorless traction algorithm with anti-slip/slide control are experimentallv verified on it. Simulator design procedure, control algorithms and some experimental waveforms are presented in this paper.
