A review of methods for gas nitriding of steel construction elements and their properties was given. The importance of right choosing the process parameters and heating conditions (460 deg C to 530 deg C for 3 h to 36 h) was evidenced. The optimum nitriding parameters were found particularly important when thick nitrided layers were produced under long-time nitriding conditions. The data on surface and maximum hardness as well as nitride layer thickness for low-alloyed chromium and chromium-molybdenum steels were collected. (Surface Treatment '2002, 5th Polish Sci. Conf., Czestochowa Kule, PL, Sep 18-20, 2002)
