Since many years the French Automotive Industry developed new processes for achieving better quality and cost savings together with an even better protection of the environment. The targets are reduction of pollution at manufacturing, CO(x), HX and NO(x) reduction, noise reduction and recycling of components. The European Community is continuously pushing for better protection our world and published the Directrive 2000/53/EC on End-of-life vehicles. The European Surface Treatment Industry has to invest in new technologies to anticipate these requests. As an example the replacement of Cr6 in the automotive industry is shown. The solution for steel coils is since the early eighties: new phosphate and cataphoretic layers. For the small parts in the car different types of coatings are necessary to fulfill the requirements. Examples for those coatings with Cr3 or with zinc flaces are demonstrated. The cost of the Cr6 replacement is discussed for screws.
