Cost effective metallic, ceramic, cermet and polymeric coatings may be deposited by thermal spraying. This article reviews the factors that must be considered in selecting the coating materials, coating process, quality issues and current applications. Thermal spray coating applications are classified here by function and industry, Primary functions served are wear and corrosion resistance, friction control, thermal resistance or conductance, thermal emission or absorption, electrical resistance or conductance, optical reflection or absorption, and catalysts. By industry, thermal spray coatings find application in aircraft gas turbine engines and non-propulsion components, metal fabrication, oil and gas production, power generation, petrochemical processes, textile machinery, automotive components, biomedical (prostheses), and the urban infrastructure (bridges).
