A model switch set up for 42 V DC switching with a current range up to 200 A using resistive and inductive loads is used to determine the switching behavior applying make&break-operations. Contact materials evaluated are fine silver, silver/nickel, silver/tin oxide and silver/zinc oxide having silver contents between 88 wt.% and 100 wt.%. in regard to the maximum current at break it is found that fine silver has the best performance with resistive as well as inductive loads. lt is found that all additives as Ni or oxides decrease breaking capacity. The decrease depends on the type of additive, amount of additive, the presence of dopants and the load applied. In regard to service life tests combined with contact resistance measurements again fine silver gives the best results. With the other materials evaluated a wide variation of results is found. Ag/ZnO materials show disadvantages with contact resistance or DC material transfer properties, while Ag/SnO2 materials have an overall satisfactory or good performance. Especially Ag/SnO2 based on doped tin oxide with 2 wt.% oxide content and low dopant content has excellent low contact resistance, no tendency to pip/crater formation and a good breaking capacity.
