Due to an increasing level of automation in rail services, controlled areas of electronic interlockings are becoming larger and larger and have more and more controlled elements. To respond to this development, the interlocking configuration must be more flexible, particularly when it comes to definition of remote controlled areas. Until now, labour- and cost-intensive trackside cabling was used for data transmission between the remote controlled areas and the interlocking centre. This article deals with a cost-effective alternative - transmission of interlocking data via public networks.
