Reliability analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge pier exposed to persistent and accidental design situations is based on the application of probabilistic methods. Principles and rules of the Eurocodes and recommendations given m JCSS Probabilistic model code are taken into account. The accidental design situation due to an impact caused by the road traffic under the bridge is considered. Results of the analysis show that the reliability of the bridge pier designed for the persistent design situation is sufficient (the reliability index beta is about 5) The probability of the pier failure given an accidental impact of the road traffic determined using probabilistic methods seems to be relatively high for highways and roads (from 0 20 to 0,25), nevertheless, within the acceptable range recommended by the European documents. Further research should be focused on probabilistic models of accidental impact forces and on probabilistic risk assessment.
