The advantage of powder coatings is their environmental performance, given that this is a VOC-free coating technology. Acrylate powder clearcoat has already been tested by the demands of the automotive industry and therefore meets highest requirements in terms of resistance to weathering, chemicals and scratching. OEM powder clearcoat is based on a functional epoxy acrylic resin. It is thermally cured with the aid of a carboxy-based hardener. At 50 - 60 um, the coating for bicycles and wheels is a lot thinner than conventional polyester/hybrid powders (from 80 - 100 um). Values between 85 and 87 units are obtained for the gloss and the acrylic clearcoats are characterised by particular resistance to weathering, chemicals and scratching. Under the powder clearcoat there is usually a waterborne or solvent-based metallic basecoat, which gives the bike or the car its colour. The basecoat is applied on top of a primer. In the bicycle industry, there is a new trend towards silk matt clear coat systems. The powder clearcoat can also be applied directly to the surface of the metal which has been made corrosion-resistant by a chrome pre-treatment.
