The purpose of this paper is to show that the development of electronics can and will contribute significantly to the overall development of new powertrain concepts. Analogous to the virtual development process in mechanics, the development methods are changing because of computation and simulation. Simultaneous engineering is possible in the field of electronics, too. Rapid prototyping allows us to describe the future functionality of a new powertrain concept at an early stage of development and to reduce the development time considerably. If the developer also makes use of automatic code generation, the powertrain concept can be implemented in series production in the foreseeable future. Further advantages are better maintainability and easy diversification. In the future, control unit manufacturers can develop algorithms independently that will be the property of the automotive producer. The brand-specific characteristics of an automobile will then prevail throughout all existing systems. A company that provides all of the above-mentioned tools for electronics development and combines them with the necessary know-how of engine and powertrain algorithms will be a very interesting partner for development within the automotive industry.
