In this work we present a new system for automatic surface inspection in aeronautical structures by means of shadow moire. The system consists of two main parts: a shadow moire device and specifically designed software for the analysis of the images generated. The shadow moire device consists of a tripod-based structure in which the illumination source and the grid are attached. This system can incorporate rigid as well as flexible gratings, being this characteristic of great importance in the study of aeronautical surfaces were in general the use of rigid grating is precluded because of their possible curvatures. The shadow moire device incorporates a CCD camera for the acquisition of the generated images that can be used for a first qualitative inspection. The second part of the system consists of specifically designed software for the analysis of the fringe patterns captured by the CCD camera incorporated to the system. This analysis software incorporates state of the art algorithms capable of automatically demodulate the deformation information contained in the shadow moire fringe pattern. Physically the whole system is implemented as a light tripod-based structure incorporating the grid, the CCD camera and the illuminating subsystem (including a portable power supply) and a laptop computer in which the analysis software is incorporated. With this design the system configure a powerful device for surface inspection in production line as well as for in-service inspection.
