This paper outlines the potentials and benefits of phased array technology for production inspection in aeronautic field. In 1998, EADS CRC started to evaluate phased array technology on Airbus products. First application was welds testing, because electronic scanning is highly appropriate for linear inspection and because electronic focusing enables to detect very tiny discontinuities. Then we extended our investigations to CFRP, taking advantage of the same function, but also of the possibility of uncoupling probe's emitting surface and receiving surface. Resulting saving of time and robots simplification (or even removal) convinced Airbus business units, since they decided to introduce phased array systems in several production lines.
