The impact and release of tread blocks on the road causes vibrations of the tyre belt, which generate sound. These acoustic sources located near tho contact patch are then amplified by the tyre/road geometry, resulting in far-field noise. Tyre noise pollution is becoming increasingly problematic, and the development of quiet road/tyre combinations is an active field. Furthermore, improvements in manufacturing techniques have increased the scope for novel designs. There is thus a strong need for a predictive model of the phenomenon. A vibration model incorporating the road surface roughness has been implemented and combined with a wave propagation model derived earlier to form a calculation method that is capable of predicting the far-field sound of a rolling tyre. Results from this approach have been compared with measurements, confirming the feasibility of the approach. The vibration model described here was chosen for its simplicity, allowing the tyre dynamics at moderate to high frequencies to be captured in analytical form. However, since it does not contain sufficient information to determine the static shape of the tyre, the relationship of the length of the contact patch to the applied load is not well predicted, which leads to an overestimation of the acceleration of the tyre belt and therefore of the far-field sound pressure level. An extension of the model has been identified which captures the main restoring forces, enabling a more accurate estimate of the mean tyre shape. It includes the tension of the belt and a spring stiffness to characterise the side walls. The new model also includes shear force contributions. This is expected to improve the prediction of the far-field sound and agreement with measured data.
