In this paper, the construction of a gas temperature fiber-optic Bragg grating (FBG) sensor network for application in the CargoLifter CL 75 AirCrane is described. The sensor network is supposed to measure the true gas temperature distribution through the volume of the helium gas fill of the airship under any flight conditions. In order to achieve this performance, miniaturised temperature sensor heads, new fibre cable constructions, and a ruggedized signal processing unit have been developed. The accuracy and reliability of fibre grating sensor fabrication and data analysis relies on successful experiences in a previous NASA spacecraft FBG sensor application. Application of a fibre-optic temperature measuring system instead of conventional electrical means overcomes possible lightning protection problems in an all-plastic airship construction, and allows to measure gas temperature distributions inside the balloon far from the envelope. The successful test in the airship gives rise to a new field of fibre-optic sensor applications in any electrically insulated constructions in the free atmosphere.
