This paper outlines the authors' thinking on vehicle body technologies for protecting pedestrians in a collision with a vehicle. A concept is described here for protecting pedestrians by improving the energy-absorbing properties of the hood as a result of securing ample space between it and the engine, front suspension and other structures at the time of a collision with a pedestrian. The hood adopts a structure for controlling the head deceleration waveform as one measure for protecting pedestrians. The hood itself displays excellent energy-absorbing properties. An effective technology for protecting pedestrians in a collision with a vehicle is to secure ample energy-absorbing space for the hood, which should be done without obstructing the flow of air during normal driving. To accomplish that, the authors have developed a hood that can be moved vertically when necessary. this rear-rising hood system for pedestrian protection consists of a sensor for detecting pedestrians, a control unit that judges the presence of a pedestrian and raises the rear edge of the hood, and a drive unit. The system raises the rear edge of the hood approximately 100 mm before a pedestrian's head strikes the hood, thereby securing additional energy-absorbing space below the hood in preparation for the impact. Accordingly, a system was developed that detects the deceleration resulting from a vehicle-pedestrian collision and inflates airbags to cover the A-pillars.
