Actuators are used in many fields of mechanical engineering and the automotive industry. They can be found in applications where exact positioning movements are needed, in operations where actuators realize a defined vibration excitation and they are used for an active optimization of the static and dynamic behavior of technical systems. There, actuators realize the physical energy transfer needed for the control actions. The paper deals, with an electromagnetic actuator that realizes unidirectional actuation forces in the kN-range and strokes of 2 mm. By means of a mechatronic concept, the electromagnetic actuator creates control forces that are proportional to the control current and independent of the displacement of the armature. Further on the electromagnetic actuator shows a quasi-proportional dynamic behavior for frequencies up to 500 Hz. The suitability of the investigated system is tested by means of an application where an active vibration excitation is demanded.
